Analysis

Nicos Anastasiades, the candidate from the EPP affiliated Democratic Party (DISY) was re-elected as President in February 2018 for a second 5-year term. He beat off the challenge of Stavros Malas of the communist Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) . Under the constitution, the President is both head of state and head of government

The 1st round of the presidential elections saw the centre-right DISY win 35%, followed by the communist AKEL on 30% and centrist DIKO on 25%. All other parties polled below 5%.  This compares to the last elections for the House of Representatives on 22 May 2016, where the President’s DISY party came out on top with 30% of the vote, followed by the communist AKEL (25%), centrist DIKO (14.5%) and Socialist EDEK (6.8%).
